Varicocele Repair

Varicocele Repair Varicocele repair is sometimes needed for men who are struggling with infertility. The varicoceles are large varicose veins that form in the scrotum, making infertility a problem. According to experts, the condition is not uncommon. It is present in about 15 percent of men overall and about 40 percent of men that are known to have infertility. It is also more common to occur in a man’s left testicle. There are sometimes treatment options for this condition including varicocele repair.

Why Do Men Need Varicocele Repair?

The most common reason for varicocele repair is to improve fertility. The procedure is not as invasive as it used to be and is considered highly effective. It is done in an outpatient setting using general or local anesthesia.

How Is Varicocele Repair Done?

During this procedure, a small incision is made along the abdomen. This is done close to the location of the testicles, and along the area where the testicles originally descended through the wall of the abdomen. Once the doctor makes the incision, he or she will then cut the veins that are causing the varicocele to occur. This stops the blood flow to them and, as a result, shrinks them in size allowing the movement of sperm more freely.

Additionally, there is a non-surgical option available. This procedure is called percutaneous immobilization. It is also a method of repairing the varicocele. In this procedure, the doctor will insert a small catheter into the large vein that’s closed in the groin or the neck. This will then travel through the body to the varicocele. Once in place, the doctor can enlarge a balloon in the catheter, coil or use medication to treat the condition.

What Are the Risks of Varicocele Repair?

There are some risks associated with this treatment, but they are the same risks associated with any type of surgery. There is a possibility that infection can occur at the site of the surgery. In some cases, men will have a buildup of fluid in the scrotum. This may require draining. Additionally, there is a risk that there will be damage to the nerves or arteries in the area of the incision.
