Cystoscopy

What is a Cystoscopy?

Cystoscopy is a test which allows your urologist to look inside of the bladder and the urethra using a lighted instrument called a cystoscope.

The cystoscope is inserted into your urethra and slowly advanced into the bladder. The cystoscopy allows the urologist to look at areas of the bladder and urethra which usually do not show up well on x-rays. Tiny surgical instruments are then inserted through the cystoscope which allows your urologist to remove tissue samples or urine samples.Cystoscopy

Reasons for a Cystoscopy

There are various reasons why your urologist may wish to perform a cystoscopy, one of the most common reasons is to find the cause of symptoms such as:

· Blood in the urine, pain while urinating, urinary incontinence, and an inability to pass urine or an urgency of urine.

· Often a cystoscopy is done when a person has reoccurring urinary tract infections or medications are ineffective when treating the urinary tract infections.

· Looking for blockages in the urethra caused by an enlarged prostate, kidney stones or tumors.

· To remove tissue samples for biopsy

· To remove foreign objects

· For the placement of a urethral stent to help urine to flow from the kidneys to the bladder.

Cystoscopy can be performed in the urology procedures area of a urology clinic or in the hospital if an overnight stay is required. Most often a cystoscopy is done as an outpatient procedure unless spinal or general anesthesia is needed.
