Abnormal Sperm

What Is Abnormal Sperm?

Sperm shape and size are one of the things doctors check when they analyze semen for patients who may be experiencing fertility problems. A normal sperm has an oval head and a long tail. If a sperm has a large head, or one that is unusually shaped, or if the tail is crooked or double, then the sperm may not be able to reach the female egg or penetrate it.

Most men have a large amount of abnormal sperm, and if you have at least 4 percent normal sperm, your semen analysis will be considered normal for sperm size and shape. The size and shape of sperm is only one factor to consider when you are having a sperm analysis. Other problems can occur if the volume of semen is reduced, or if you have a low sperm count. Sometimes, sperm may not be “motile,” which means they cannot reach the egg for fertilization.

Can I Father Children if I Have Abnormal Sperm?

It’s very important to realize that all men have many abnormally shaped sperm. If your semen analysis shows a larger than normal percentage of abnormal sperm, you may have more difficulty with fertility, but can still father a child. Sometimes, abnormal sperm shapes are seen in combination with other abnormalities  in the semen, like low motility or a diminished sperm count.

What Can I Do To Make Normal Sperm?

There are several factors that are associated with abnormal sperm, although it is still not clear what the relationship may be. However, Dr. Arnold Melman, one of New York’s top urologists, counsels patients to limit tobacco, recreational drugs, caffeine, and alcohol. These substances may cause damage to the DNA in the sperm. Studies show that marijuana may cause abnormalities of sperm size and shape.

Some things that are assessed in a semen analysis include the volume of semen, and how quickly it liquefies after ejaculation, the number and shape of the sperm, and the percentage of sperm that move normally. The pH of the semen is also measured. Fructose in semen provides energy for sperm, so levels of fructose, which is a sugar, are measured.
